Leon´s cathedral: The cathedral is located on the main square and is the largest church in all of Central America. Inside there are the remains of famous writer Ruben Dario who died in the city.
This 200-year old cathedral has survived old kind of things, from a civil war to several earthquakes. I think its award from 2011 as World Heritage Site is well worth.
A really cool thing about the cathedral are the views from the roof. The entrance is US$2 and they limit the visit to 30 minutes (you can often stay longer). Make sure you take your shoes off and be ready for remain speechless. The white roof it’s impressive, completely different from everything else in the city!
From the rooftop, you will see the 34 domes of the cathedral, incredible views from the city and a couple of volcanos like Momotombo. Did you forget your camera? It is no excuse, run and find it!
San Juan de Dios church (on the left): Built in 1739. Behind the church discover one of the best and cheap local markets in town.
Church of La Recoleccion (on the right): Constructed in 1786 it is maybe the only yellow church in town, that’s makes the church pretty unique.
Church of San Francisco: Built in 1639 it is one of the city oldest. The inside doesn’t have a lot of decoration but the outside is still cool to see.
Sutiaba church: Sutiaba was its own village before Leon relocated a kilometre East. Now it is just another neighborhood of Leon. The church was built in 1530 and features artwork and symbols that pay homage to deities predating the Spanish conquest.
